Santa Vs. God

Divine Intervention

February 15, 2011

Divine Intervention.
Every day I see people and hear people talk about how God helped them complete some asinine task.

“My car started, Thank you god!”

“I found my keys, Thank you god”

“Thank you for that touchdown, god”.

If you have been raised for years and years to believe that God does EVERYTHING than of course you will believe he intervenes in day to day activities.  The thing is, usually if he is helping you then he is screwing over someone else.   I watched the Super Bowl and every time there was a touchdown, the players pointed to the sky.  What a God Damn insult to the coaches and to themselves.  They put in the practice, the coaches spent countless hours with them and when something goes right they don’t thank themselves or their coaches, they thank somebody who has had ZERO influence on any of their training.  Also, who is Gods favorite sports team?  Under the logic that the players use he must really like you when he lets you score, but what about when he lets the other team score?  Were you not praying enough during the play?  Did you not point at him the exact right way after your touchdown, so he got pissed?  It doesn’t make any sense, none at all.

I don’t play sports, so I can’t use the example with my life. But, I have gone to college and when I do well on a test, I can thank myself and my professor.  I put in the studying, I made sure I attended class and I paid attention/took good notes.  I never prayed once, I didn’t even think of god or go to church during my college years; I still did better than most of the kids who prayed over every test and went to church every week. (I am from Utah, the majority of the kids I went to school with are VERY religious).  It is ridiculous to give credit where credit isn’t due.   The same goes for “medical miracles”, the entire country is thanking god for saving the Congress woman, Gabrielle Gifford.  Who would think to thank the team of surgeons and doctors who spent more time with her than any of the other patients. They did nothing out of the ordinary, right?  They only saved her life, but praise the lord.  People in America think it is a miracle that she was saved after being shot in the head, yet they forget that six other people died in that attack.  Where was god when those people were being shot to death?  He was busy making sure ONE lady survived.   If god does exist, he is a dick.

I have several friends who have prayed over who they should marry. They don’t use their own heart to decide, they have to look up to the imaginary man in the clouds and ask if it is good or not.  Well, they usually get the answer that they should go ahead and get married.  The last two people I know who prayed over their husbands are now divorced. The first ones husband raped her several times, stole her credit cards and bought a lot of expensive  porn with it.  The second girl’s husband cheated on her several times.  By their logic, God set this up and was okay with it. It’s pretty easy to see that god had absolutely no say in their marriage; it was their own emotions that made the decision.  They still believe that god answers all their prayers; it is hard for me to think of them as sane individuals when they still believe god talks to them and gives them good information after what they’ve been through.

My last example has to do with my step mom.  She and my dad had two kids and she said “NO MORE”, my dad already had three kids from a previous marriage and she thought five was a good round number.  Well, one day god talked to her and told her that another soul was in heaven waiting to come down to earth and it was up to her to make it happen.  So, one thing leads to another and nine months later I have another sibling.  The issue with this one is, she could have gotten pregnant 30 other times and had 30 other kids if she wanted to, the amount of babies you have has nothing to do with how many “souls” are in heaven, it has to do with the sperm and eggs.  As Richard Dawkins said

“We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones.  Most people
are never going to die because they are never going to be born.  The
potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in
fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara.
Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats,
scientists greater than Newton.  We know this because the set of
possible people allowed by our DNA so massively outnumbers the set of
actual people.  In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I,
in our ordinariness, that are here.  We privileged few who won the
lottery of birth against all odds.”

The truth is, I could have had millions of other new siblings, one lucky sperm made it to the egg and the other 100 million were cleaned out and died.  I apply the same logic to rape victims who have babies, were they part of gods plan?  He had a soul up in heaven ready to go down to that lady who just happened to get slipped a date rape drug?  What about incest babies?  Does he have a slew of souls who are ready to go down to the brothers who get their sisters pregnant? Or to the dads who get their daughters pregnant?  Just stopping and thinking makes it so easy to realize how obvious it is that god does not exist.  These are just a few examples that make it pretty easy to realize that believing in a deity should make you a crazy person, not part of the majority of America.  I hope that everyone can take some time and put some logic towards real life situations and realize that God isn’t helping you, you are helping you.

Who created God?

January 30, 2011

Where did God come from?  This has been a question I have been asking
my entire life. The question was always brushed off and never answered.
Religious apologist’s will say “Nothing can come from nothing,
therefore the big bang theory is impossible”. Well, I offer the same
argument about a God or any deity.

How is it possible for a God to come about but impossible for a world,
galaxy, or universe to come about?
The religious will point out that their God has always been in
existence, he has no beginning and he has no end.  The only reason
they believe this is because in the Christian bible it says ” . . .
even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Psalm 90:2).
They are using a 2000 year old book that has talking snakes, talking
donkeys, virgin birth, mass extinction and thousands of contradictions
in it.  This book promotes slavery, rape and murder, of people who
disobey certain rules.  The book is used in saying the world is only
6000 – 10,000 years old which contradicts all science, evolution and
the fact that dinosaurs used to exist.  The book has so much wrong
with it, yet it is perfect to all the followers of it and proves that
God has always existed.

Bertrund Russell has a good analogy that I think applies to people who
think the bible is infallible and the word of god.
“If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china
teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be
able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the
teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful
telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion
cannot be disproved, it is an intolerable presumption on the part of
human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking
If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in
ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled
into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its
existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter
to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the
Inquisitor in an earlier time”

Religious people argue that “everything needs a creator … except the
things I say don’t need a creator, like God”.  This argument is the
worst, they don’t use any sort of logic or thinking when they argue
the existence of their god(s).  As a lot of people see it, as well as
I, religion was the first scientific attempt at understanding the
world and universe.  Hundreds of Gods have come and gone and been
disproven over time, yet some of them still ‘exist’ in a large portion
of the world’s minds.  A quote I like starts off with a question
“Prove god doesn’t exist!” and the ultimate response is “Show me how
it’s done by proving Zeus and Apollo don’t exist, and I’ll use your
method.” Remember, Zeus and Apollo used to be regarded on the same
level as the Christian god is regarded today.  But, as science has
taught us, we now know that lightning doesn’t come from a man up on a
tall mountain.  Lightning is a discharge of atmospheric electricity
which is triggered by a buildup of differing charges within a cloud.
Science is trying to answer the questions of how everything started
and one day all of those questions will be common knowledge (without
looking to a God as the creator), but to take something you don’t know
and say “God did it” is a pretty bleak way to look at the
world/universe and it also won’t get you any smarter.  They use reverse logic when dealing with Evolution.  “Evolution has no proof and therefore I do not believe in it” “God has no proof that is why you need Faith” (Both two sentences spoken directly from the mouth of a religious person)

So, Who created God?  This question has no answer, it can’t have an
answer.  The most religious people in the world don’t know. The people
who claim to talk to God on a daily basis don’t know.  It’s all a
matter of “Faith” to them.  Well, have faith in the teapot that orbits
the sun because it is there!

This is a subject that seems to make a lot of people either really happy or really mad.
The bible can’t possibly be true if Evolution is true, so religious people refuse to believe in it.  The fact of the matter is, Evolution is undeniably true.

First off, people usually criticize Evolution because they say “it’s only a theory”.  The thing that is weak with this argument is that the argument doesn’t hold ground because a theory in science is very different than a theory you would use in everyday conversation.   The dictionary defines theory as “ an unproved assumption”, in science a theory is the highest degree of certainty.  Gravity is “just a theory”.  The Earth orbiting the Sun is “just a theory.”  By definition, a scientific theory is a hypothesis which has withstood rigorous testing and is well-supported by facts.  There is overwhelming evidence for evolution, just as there is overwhelming evidence for gravity.

Why isn’t Evolution a Law?  This is an issue which often confuses the general public, as the two words have very different common meanings.  But in science, their meanings are very similar.  A theory is an explanation which is backed by “a considerable body of evidence,” while a law is a set of regularities expressed in a “mathematical statement.”  This is why Newton’s Laws of Motion are referred to as laws and not theories.  They are expressed with simple equations (like f = ma for his 2nd Law of Motion).  Evolution, and most of Biology, cannot be expressed in a concise mathematical equation, so it is referred to as a theory.  A scientific law is not “better” or “more accurate” than a scientific theory.  A law explains what will happen under certain circumstances, while a theory explains how it happens.

Now, to Evolution.  The definition as google says is “A gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form.”  This started billions of years ago with single cell organisms which gradually made themselves better and eventually turned into everything you see on Earth today.  Not only has the fossil record proven that we have evolved over time but we can now test this using DNA which also proves that we have all evolved from other animals that lived before us.  A lot of people who don’t agree with Evolution will say “When I see monkeys give birth to humans then I will believe in Evolution.”  The problem with that phrase is a monkey didn’t one day give birth to a human. Why there are still Chimpanzees/apes Evolution is small changes over a period of time, it took millions of years for the humans you see on Earth today to come about.   We didn’t even come from the monkeys you see on earth today, we had a common ancestor which scientists believe lived around 5 – 8 million years ago.  This common ancestor diverged into two separate lineages.  One of these lineages ultimately evolved into modern day gorillas and chimps, and the other evolved into early human ancestors called hominids.  We have gone through several changes since then, more commonly known are Homo Habilis, Home Erectus, Home Neanderthalensis.  We have fossils to prove this, we didn’t just make this up and write in a book and say “See, it’s in a book – it has to be true!”

Some of you may wonder why none of those species still exist, this is because of a thing called “Natural Selection.”  This is basically “Survival of the fittest.”  If a giraffe is born with a longer neck than it will be able to reach hire leaves on the tree and be able to survive longer because of a longer neck.  The shorter necked giraffes will slowly die out because they can’t compete with the longer necked giraffes.  This is a main driving force of evolution, small changes that gives the new creature a small advantage to living.  This has been seen and viewed in science labs.  For instance, germs and diseases have adapted to medicine and antibiotics and get stronger all the time – which is why we are constantly making new vaccines and stronger antibiotics.

We know this is all true because it has been tested and tested again.  Scientists can date the earth, date fossils and everything lines up perfectly for the earth being somewhere around 4.6 billion years old.   A lot of people say that Carbon dating or radiometric dating isn’t very reliable.  The thing is, there is several different dating methods and they all hold up against testing and have been proven to work.  Radiometric clocks include; Samarium-neodymium dating, Potassium-argon dating, Rubidium-strontium dating, uranium-thorium dating, Radiocarbon dating, fission dating, Chlorine-36 dating.
